Plum Recipes - The Abundant Kitchen Garden

A place for us to share the best ways to use produce from your garden, foraging or your friends and families garden. We will share recipes, craft ideas and inspiration to help ensure nothing goes to waste. Whether it adds to your pantry, party or a gift for someone special!

Summer fruits are in an abundance in The Southern Hemisphere at the moment and plums are no exception! So read on to get inspiration of what you can make with an abundance of plums and two delicious recipes to try. Let us know if you would like us to share our other recipes too! 

 

Our favourite ways to use plums are - 

  1. Plum Jam (recipe below)
  2. Plum Relish (recipe below)
  3. Plum Cobbler
  4. Plum Sauce
  5. Plum Crumble

PLUM JAM

INGREDIENTS

2kg Plums

1/2 cup water

2 cups of jam sugar

2 cups of white sugar

4 tablespoons of lemon juice

METHOD

1.     Wash your plums and remove the stones.

2.     Cut into chunks and add to a large pot with the water and bring to the boil.

3.     Lower to medium heat and simmer for around 20 minutes. Ensure you stir regularly!

4.     Add the lemon juice and both sugars, stirring regularly to ensure the sugar dissolves.

5.     Increase the heat back up and bring to a low boil for around 20 minutes. Stir regularly to ensure it doesn’t burn.

6.     Add to your boiled sterilized jars and seal.

 

PLUM RELISH

INGREDIENTS

1kg of plums  - stoned removed & chopped

1 onion - diced

3 apples – peeled & chopped

3 cloves of garlic - crushed

1 ½ cups white wine vinegar

1 cup of white sugar

1 cup of jam sugar

½ tsp chilli flakes

1 tsp ginger

1 tsp curry powder

¼ tsp salt

METHOD

1.     In a large pot place the plums, apples, onion and garlic. Then add all other ingredients.

2.     Bring the mixture to the boil then reduce heat down to a gentle boil/simmer and cook for around 45 minutes ensuring you stir regularly.

3.     Boil & sterilize your jars, pour the relish mixture in and seal.
